It is hard to be believe how quickly the year has passed since Dekro undertook its first fund raising activities for the National Breast Cancer Foundation Pink Ribbon Day.
Last years effort of $520, raised at
Federation Square in Melbourne was smashed this year with our early
morning efforts at Parliament Station. The record to beat next year is
$2,158.10, which we managed to raise in about two and a half hours. The
morning began with early wake up calls at 5:00am for all six (6) of the
Dekro volunteers, who needed to be on the station dressed in Pink Shirts
with merchandise in hand by 6:30am. A special mention must go to our
Team Leader and organizer for the day, Deanne, who was ready and
waiting for the team with shirts and merchandise available and a whole
lot of enthusiasm!
After a quick takeaway coffee
(thanks Chris) the team split up with Christine, Jacqueline and Chris
braving the elements at the top of the stairs exiting onto Spring
Street while Michelle, Deanne and Doug opted for the warmth of the
underground platform. Of course we must not forget Frossy who was back
at Dekro covering the office.
It is an amazing and eye opening
experience to greet thousands of bleary eyed commuters with a cheerful
"GOOD MORNING" shouted at them from a person in a bright pink shirt as
many try to avoid eye contact and stuff their ipod earphones back in.
However, the realisaton of what we were there for and the connection
that this charity event makes with the wider community (and the fact
that a pink ribbon now goes with most men's ties these days!)
guarantees a warm reply of at least a smile if not a return "good
morning" and in so many cases a donation or a purchase.
In the midst of an economic crisis people still gave generously and we thank them all for their contributions and donations.
We especially thank them for buying
all our merchandise so quickly, because it meant we could get to
breakfast that little bit quicker. Even though it was very much a team
effort the star of the day was Christine who ended up selling alone in
the cold, holding merchandise and money while maintaining that cheerful
disposition. Her personal collection tally was $560 (26%) of the team's
full amount.
It was a fun team building
experience that we can recommend to others. So the challenge is on for
next year for ourselves to beat this years tally and to any of our
clients or suppliers - who would like to join in and volunteer for a
good cause.Of course as competitive as we are, there will only be one
winner and that is Breast Cancer research and the Pink Ribbon Appeal.
